WESUP LEGENDS PADDLE FOR HERO'S
Last weekend, WESUP (the UK’s only dedicated Fanatic and ION shop and demo centre), hosted their first serious flat water SUP competition, the atmosphere and the crowd however, were anything but!
The 'WESUP Legends' event, in support of Help The Hero's was everything you would want in an event. The scenery, beautiful, the Novemeber weather held out and even offered blue skies and sunshine; the racing was competitive and the atmosphere was energetic and fun.
WESUP’s Sean White told us, “The off-shore wind slowly picked up throughout the day, so it only added to a more exciting challenge. For the Legends taking part in the mammoth Middle-Distance 6k Sprint, the competitors were forced to put the burn on their right sides as they paddled for 2.5k into the 20mph cross wind! Lizzie Bird described the race as the most physically consuming race she has ever competed in, even above her recent marathon!”
However, after 36 competitors had entered the competiton, the guys at WESUP had to put together a whole new race....'The 4k Amateur Legend', due to a different league of competitors entering who needed to borrow boards!
WESUP’s Legends, definitely had something for everyone and with so many spectators turning up to support both the paddlers and the charity, SUP on Gylly Beach has now been firmly put on the map, not just in Cornwall but also across the UK.
We asked Sean what next for future WESUP events, now that winter is setting in. Will we have to wait until summer for the next one?
“Not at all! Winter’s not going to put us off getting out on the water. At WESUP we have promised a series of events, which we will be releasing in due course. We would like to take the opportunity to thank all of the incredible competitors whose high spirits and enthusiasm made the event truly unique. Also a huge thanks to a group of fantastic sponsors including: Sea Kayak Cornwall who provided suburb safety cover, Pureblue Water, Freeriders, Nick Healy Marine Surveyors, Gylly Beach Cafe and of course Fanatic, ION and K66. It wouldn't have been possible without you all”.
